| Description |
It all started with Bob Nordskog's Powerboat Special in the mid 1980s and continued under such famous names as Ohio Steel, Ocean Spray, Rio Roses, Pier 57 and Yachts International. This 42 has the same staggered engine set-up that brings the propellers close together, keeping the center of gravity low, down along the keel where it works best. Increased speed, performance, handling and excitement are the result.
With the 525s, this 42 Lightning will hit 88 MPH and cruise all day at 58 MPH. You get over 300 miles of cruising due to a fuel burn of a mere 54 gallons per hour at cruise. Over a mile per gallon is not bad for any 42 footer, much less on that covers 58 miles in an hour. There are only 260 hours on the engines. Bravo XR drives mate perfectly with the 525s. Add in offshore K-Plane trim tabs and Silent Choice exhausts, Latham Steering and tie bars, and you have a complete high performance power train. Fountain, having thought of everything, even the Bimini is speed rated.
The color scheme is pretty tame compared to many sport boats today. I found it very classy, with no need for an "in your face" style of beauty. The cockpit is served by the huge sunpad over the engines, with Fountain Logo. Room for three or four on the aft bench seat. Drink holders and hnd holds are readily available.
The helm is also quietly attractive and functional. Full engine gauges, depth, compass, stereo remote, and fire protection are all easily reached from the electric bolster seats or while standing. Companion side has a glove box and other stowage.
Down below is plenty big and comfortable for a weekend or more. Air conditioning, Refridgerator, shower,enclosed head, and room for 6 or more on the U-shaped settee. Forward is a large V-berth. The color scheme is white with red carpet for a clean, classy look.
The hull design is a compilation of years af racing and winning. Starting with Reggie Fountain's legendary pad keel, notched transom, and Positive Lift hull. Add staggered engines to move the center of gravity down toward the keel where it does the most good. These hull are pretty efficient which translates to better performance and less fuel burn.
